Patten University is committed to providing a liberal arts education with a strong biblical studies emphasis. Study of the Bible is essential for Christian faith and personal growth because it is the inspired Word of God. As such, the Bible reveals God’s character and expectations, traces human history from its origins to the emergence of early Christianity, and provides the necessary values for an ethical life. The written word of God is a vehicle by which the Holy Spirit continues to guide and influence the Christian in modern times.
Biblical study at Patten is an academic process which uniquely integrates faith and learning. While biblical truth is foundational for learning, this truth must be derived and supported by such intellectual skills as thoughtful reading, critical reasoning, research writing and oral debate. The ability to read, think and write cogently is mandatory for proper completion of all course assignments.
This 24-unit program may be taken on campus or at an off-campus extension site. The eight courses of the program correspond to courses taught in Patten’s B.A. program. Courses may be transferred to the B.A. program, provided that the student first meets the entrance requirements of that program.
A student is awarded the Biblical Studies-Ministry Certificate upon completion of this 24-unit program with a GPA of 2.0 or above. This program trains those who will be serving as directors of Christian activities or as pastoral assistants .
